What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes means that the body is unable to produce enough insulin or there is insulin resistance, which increases the blood sugar levels of the body. It is categorized as one of the most common types of diabetes around the world. And is all dependent on an individual’s family history, habits and lifestyle. To clarify, insulin is a hormone generated by the pancreas and helps the body control blood sugar levels. And Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body stops making enough insulin or doesn’t use the insulin well.

This type of diabetes can occur at any age but is more likely to be developed after 45. Individuals battling weight issues or obesity are in the higher risk category of this disease. Inactivity in your day-to-day life also plays a role in contributing to type 2 diabetes.

What is Diabetes according to Ayurveda?

Diabetes is a metabolic type of lifestyle disease. As per Ayurveda, in this disease, the Agni (digestive fire) is not functioning right, which exhibits cardinal symptoms of Prameha like Prabhootha mutrata, Avila mutrata and Medo dushti lakshanas. As per this holistic approach, diabetes is called Prameha or sweet urine and is mainly a Kapha dosha disease, but the Vata dosha also plays a role. In Ayurveda, diabetes is classified into 20 different forms based on the Doshas in the body. The two main reasons why an individual can develop diabetes are:

Dhatukshaya : The loss of tissues in the body which is also known as Dhatus

Avarana : The blockage of the pathways in the body due to the Kalpa Dosha.

Ayurvedic Approach to Diabetes reversal

Following are the aspects of ayurvedic treatment for diabetes that could play an important role in reversing this type of diabetes

  • Ayurvedic Diet: This is considered one of the key pillars of Ayurveda and revolves around an individual’s eating habits. Controlling these eating habits will help one follow a routine and align the body’s internal system. Ayurveda focuses on basic dietary guidelines and combinations of food. It also includes cooking, storing the food, hygiene, and etiquette of preparing the food. An ideal diet usually consists of light food items like Manthas (different types of flours mixed with water), Saktu (Roasted flour), bitter vegetables, cooked rice with moong soup, food recipes with honey, and much more. These food items help reduce the Kapha Dosha. To receive the complete benefits of Aahra, it is essential to have the right knowledge about “Astha Ahara Vidhivisheshaayatana” means the factors that are responsible for the wholesome and the unwholesome effect of the Ahara (food) and the methods of Ahara sevana. (food intake)
  • Lifestyle: This is all about having a harmonious lifestyle, and as per Ayurveda, it is advisable to follow what your Prakriti requires, which in turn will keep the body healthier. Regular exercise will improve the body’s strength, appetite, stamina, resistance, blood circulation, etc. Blood pressure and Cholesterol levels play an additional advantage in reversing and treating diabetes. And both these factors can be controlled with exercise and lifestyle modifications.
  • Medications: Medications like extracts of Musta, Darunisa, Triphala, and Visala are mixed to form a paste which is known to be effective in the treatment of all types of diabetes. It has no known side effects on the body, and the studies show that the outcome of this is promising and has been effective in diabetes reversal at Ayuvi.

The main goal of reversing diabetes is to understand the root cause of this disease, which helps resolve the Kalpa Dosha, the root cause of diabetes.

Is Diabetes reversal possible?

Yes, although it depends upon various factors. To begin with, it starts with the determination of Prakriti and the root cause of the disease. Since all our bodies are different and have different compositions, the approach for every individual is personalised and different from one another. With the help of medications and proper diet and exercise, reversal of this disease is possible, and it is not just temporary. Maintaining it with a healthy lifestyle will eventually lead to living a medication-free life.
