Why do we need immunity?

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made us realise the importance of good health and the drawbacks of a weak immune system. Hence, the first tactic for healthcare management during this pandemic would be to address this and build a strong immune system.

What is immunity?

What-is-immunity

Immunity refers to the body’s ability to fight against any foreign entity recognised by it, through a complex network of cells, enzymes, metabolites, and immunomodulatory chemicals. While we are not born with strong immunity, we tend to develop it as we grow, suffering from multiple infections and recovering.

Seasonal variations

There have been scientific studies to prove the variation of immunity through seasons. This is because some of the genes regulating immune systems are more potent in summer. It has also been noted that shedding in flu viruses is affected by temperature and relative humidity in animal models. Longer summer days allow more exposure to vitamin D, which also boosts immunity.

Ayurveda to boost immunity

Ayurveda is one of the oldest branches of alternative medicine that originated 3000 years ago in India. It deals with a holistic perspective of healing the whole body with the help of natural ingredients (herbs) rich in nutrients and antioxidants. In Sanskrit, Bala, Vyadhi Kshamathwa, and Ojas are relative terms for strength, resilience, and immunity against foreign pathogens.

The most important and commonly found herbs and spices that have the best impact on immunity include

turmeric

Turmeric (Haldi) is an old and potent bearer of health andimmunitythat is part of the Indian kitchen. The yellow pigment in turmeric, known as curcumin, is scientifically proven to possess antioxidant and antiseptic properties. A pinch of turmeric in warm milk every day goes a long way. Adding turmeric along with black pepper to food also gives a healthy boost to food. Curcumin has been proven to help patients with inflammatory disorders, cancer, and asthma, among other diseases.

giloy

Giloy has proven anti-inflammatory properties that make it another must-have herb in the diet. It is a blood purifier that helps in food digestion. Giloy taken together with Tulsi, another magic herb, offers a much-needed boost to the immune system. The juice can be had with warm water for best results.

ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is another woody herb that has proven benefits in stress management and control of blood sugar levels. For best results, one can add ashwagandha to milk and turmeric.

amla

Amla or the Indian Gooseberry is a miracle fruit for vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which are crucial in boosting immunity and promoting healthy living. Amla juice is best consumed on an empty stomach in the morning.

In these testing times, taking the best care of our health should be our top priority. Swearing by these magic herbs, including the best produce of the season on our plates and cutting down on stress, are the best gifts we can give our body.
