Immunity is our body’s natural defense system that protects us from various illnesses. It is weak at birth but gradually strengthens through constant interaction with microbes present in the environment. Immunity varies for different individuals since it depends on genetics as well as Dietary and lifestyle factors.

For optimum health and wellness ,Ayurveda provides detailed guidance on how to strengthen our immunity or Vyadhi-Kshamatwa.

What is the meaning of Vyadhi-Kshamatwa in Ayurveda?

Vyadhi-Kshamatwa or immunity is our our ability to resist development of any disease and ability to successfully recover after sickness. A strong Vyadhi-kshamatwa keeps us healthy.

Immunity plays a prominent role in determining and maintaining the bala (or strength) of an individual. According to Ayurveda, we can classify immunity/bala into the following three types:

  • Sahaja Bala – Sahaja Bala is the immunity that is present since birth. It is influenced by parent’s genetic factors.
  • Kalaja Bala- Kalaja Bala is the type of immunity that depends on seasonal variations as well as on an individual’s age. It is known to be weak during the summer season and gradually acquire strength during the winter season.
  • Yuktikrit Bala- Yuktikrit Bala is the immunity that we acquire through our diet and lifestyle. It is important to consume a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly for a stronger yuktikrit Bala.

Apart from the physical and external environments, our minds can play a crucial role in regulating the immune system. Excess worry, anxiety, or stress may lead to the release of various hormones that may interfere with the digestive and immune systems of the body and weaken them. Ayurveda emphasizes taking equal care of your mind to boost your immunity.

What are the several factors that may affect immunity negatively?

A stronger immunity is essential to keep various diseases at bay. However, several factors may have detrimental effects on our bodies and weaken our immunity. They are:

Improper diet
Improper diet

An unbalanced diet that consists of raw or processed foods and lacks nutrition may impair your immunity and cause several diseases.

stress
Stress

Stress releases an excess amount of cortisol in your body. This in turn can reduce the amount of nourishment your immune system receives from your blood and lower your immunity.

obasity
Obesity

Obesity is generally the result of an imbalance in hormonal functions and a low metabolism rate. Also, excess fat in the body impairs the immune system and makes it an easy target for bacterial and viral infections.

dehydration
Dehydration

Lack of water in the body reduces its natural defense mechanism and also leads to the loss of blood cells.

Chronic-medications
Chronic medications

A prolonged use of medications like antibiotics or steroids may also reduce the number of healthy bacteria in your body and weaken your immunity.

Conclusion:

Ayurveda wellness treatment focuses on increasing your immunity naturally by establishing a balance between your body and mind. It is one of the most holistic forms of wellness and following the various ayurvedic health tips can help you lead a strong and happy life!
